Field of investigation: Ethics, politics and anthropology.

Description: This project consists of two aspects. The first one seeks to make a philosophical analysis of the most relevant arguments of ethics throughout history of philosophy that are oriented to the making of decisions and entail some type of moral judgment, or of those philosophical approaches that have most influenced behavioral criteria in diverse sectors of contemporary culture (XX and XIX centuries). On the other hand, the second aspect concentrates on a social-philosophical analysis of the habits and criteria concerning decision making. Because ethics is also a practical knowledge oriented to favor a certain type of behavioral criteria, it is very important to analyze from a philosophical and sociological point of view the way in which individuals in our society actually make their estimating decisions. Ethics, so understood, doesn't seek to give rules with specific behavioral content; instead, it seeks to promote rational decision making.

Who Decides What Is Right And What Is Wrong? Ethics and Rationality. Universidad Iberoamericana/Plaza y Valdes, México, 2007.
Who decides what is right and wrong? This question, frequently repeated in our contemporary culture, is usually accompanied by a certain protest or skepticism towards the defenders of ethics. The question reflects the generalized conviction that no one can impose moral criteria on anyone else. Today it seems that any ethical attempt to establish moral criteria is at the same time a conservative attempt to return to an expired morality and in many cases a vicious morality. This book combines various analyses of the moral conception of our times with the study of classical authors. The purpose of this is to sustain the proposal of an open ethic or an ethic of growth based in diverse considerations of human nature. Its main objective is not to expose a doctrine of moral precepts, but to awake in its reader a greater conscience of his moral responsibility when making his own judgments.

“ The existential theory of history. An analysis of the XX century, en Revista de Filosofía. Universidad Iberoamericana No. 122, año 40, mayo-agosto de 2008.
In his Phenomenology of Perception Merleau-Ponty postulates the "existential theory of history" with which he seeks to extract historical materialism from the reductionism of pretending to define the drama of existence through purely economical significations. To the French author there is an important field of liberty and individual interests that can also influence history. This essay makes a historical analysis of the twentieth century´s economical and ideological sense based on the above mentioned theory.

"The missfortunes of life as an impediment for happiness. A current look to the Aristotelian approach." Anuari de la cátedra Ramón Llull Blanquerna 2007. Ars Brevis, Barcelona, 2008.
In what way can life´s misfortunes condition and even eliminate a person's happiness? In what measure can we face and overcome these misfortunes? These are two fundamental questions that Aristotle considers in his practical philosophy. They both can be considered in our contemporary context, more than twenty five centuries apart, for they are matters as relevant today as they were back then.

"Are we really in postmodern times? A philosophical perspective", en Nuestra Comunidad No 157. Universidad Iberoamericana. Abril de 2005.
The essential of the modern project was to promote the rule of technological progress in order to domain nature and guaranty a healthy and comfortable life for mankind. In the middle of the twentieth century Adorno and Horkheimer published The Dialectic of Enlightenment, in this text they criticized the enlightened and modern project saying it was exhausted and vicious because it fell into the same dynamics that it intended to break. After the publishing of this book it was said that modern times were over and that the current times were therefore post-modern. None the less there are still several events that respond to modern ideas, therefore we can´t say that we are completely in post-modern times. This century will still be filled with modern elements, but it will also include traits of the time to come. Current times must be understood as a transition period and not as consumed post-modernity.

"The good culture of the consumer", en Signo de los tiempos N° 125, México, Diciembre de 2003.
This brief article shows some traits of our contemporary culture that in some sectors of society have favored a more rational consumerism. These traits are the valorization of the need and benefit of what is consumed, its quality, the attention to specifications of the product, the comparison of prices, the search for opportunities, the manifestation of complains and suggestions in commercial establishments and in public opinion, and the relation of the commercial brand with other products.

"The paradox of happiness", en Istmo. Revista del pensamiento actual Nº 164, México 1986.
Considering human life as a sum of motives in favor of happiness, but also of suffering, the essay shows the paradox that the search for happiness in a direct manner holds, because ordinarily happiness is accompanied and is the product of other actions. On the contrary, when it is sought in a direct manner the risk of not finding it and of unintentionally becoming much more apprehensive of the unwanted misfortunes that any person faces appears.
