CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF CONTEMPORARY CULTURE FROM THE FRONTIERS BETWEEN PHILOSOPHY AND LITERATURE.

Field of investigation: Critical analysis of contemporary culture from the frontiers between philosophy and literature.

Description: The project "Critical analysis of contemporary culture from the frontiers between philosophy and literature" sets out to study diverse cultural, political and social phenomena that are manifested in literature and in various contemporary philosophical reflections that also approach them, so that it is possible to reestablish a critical vision of these phenomena by making a reflection from the common frontiers of both disciplines and this way, build a bridge between them. On another hand, the project seeks to methodologically promote a way of making philosophy that, without losing seriousness, rigor and consistency, separates itself from the vices of excessive academicism which has expanded in the last few years and which many times is the impediment of true philosophical reflection.

(Colaboration in the book) "Melancholy as a romantic passion. Werther and Kierkegaard". En el libro: La melancolía. Entre la psicología, la filosofía y la cultura. Las lecturas del Sileno. Universidad Iberoamericana. México, 2010.
Based on the notion of melancholy as absence, this is, of living in a reality to which one doesn´t belong to, in a society and in stereotypes one does not accept; this essay explores the melancholy of romanticism through the personalities of Werther, created by Goethe, and of Kierkegaard, who defined himself as a profoundly melancholic person. The romantic is not comfortable in this world; he is and is not in it. Melancholy is the feeling of this absence.

The central proposal of this article is to enhance the individual and social value that has the reading of literature. Based in Tolkien´s essay, "About fairytales", four categories that activate in the reader of a story or novel are reflected upon. The first is the place where fantasy takes place, an alternate world different from reality. Because of this new world we can take part in a story with new characters, laws and events. The second category proposed by Tolkien allows the ordinary and even forgotten to acquire a new value by being reflected in literature; sometimes it is necessary to distance ourselves from something to rediscover its value. The next category is the escape. Fantasy does not change our world, but it does create a new one and helps us in a positive way to escape from many of the wrongs, incoherencies and unrealities of what we call real world. Finally, the consolation proposed by Tolkien shows the hope literature can give when facing a pessimistic scenery of reality. In this sense, many literary works show us heroism and deeds in the fight against evil and injustice.

In his posthumous work, The Citadel, Saint-Exupery developed, through literary images, an interesting criticism f rationalism that claims to be the basis of human coexistence, aspect that seems -at first sight- contrary to many contemporary philosophical proposals. Freedom and human creativity cannot be judged by parameters of a given reality, but by that which is to emerge as something new. The emir of the Citadel faces this problem.

"The construction of aesthetical discourse. Heidegger and the «esence of poetry»". Revista de Filosofía de la Universidad Iberoamericana. No.118. Enero-Abril 2007. Poetry is the most dangerous occupation and, at the same time, the most innocent task. Heidegger builds on this dialectic his essay about "Hölderlin and the essence of poetry". A reading of this piece viewed from romanticism, especially from irony, may turn into one of the keys of Heidegger´s requirement: "Only when we can conceive both determinations in one single thought we will conceive the full essence of poetry."

"The literary experience of death. Towards The Death of Iván Ilich by León Tolstoi" en La Colmena. Revista de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, No. 60, octubre-diciembre de 2008. Opposed to some thinkers who affirm that nothing can be said about death, philosophers as Heidegger and Jaspers sustain that some limit experiences question our existence in terms of finitude, and in this sense it is possible to speak of death. When in literature death constitutes a mayor element of the trama and the reader has a certain sensibility or willingness to experience, then literature can be a limit experience that allows the reader to encounter death. In "The Death of Ivan Ilich", the reader gets to know the temporal universe of the character and accompanies him in all of his reflections until he finally encounters death. In this sense, this novel can be a limit experience that, accompanied by Tolstoi´s reflections, opens the possibility of making a critical reflection about death.

"My last victim", en Istmo. Revista del pensamiento actual Nº 166, México 1986. This story pretends to evoke the Borgean narration where the protagonist is a paid murderer who has been assigned the task of killing Borges. The story gathers many images and literary elements of the Argentinean writer and some referents of his work.
